Magazine lesson 2: Brain Storming Ideas

In today’s lesson we where put into groups of 4, consisting of me, Michael, Derek and Zeneath. In our groups we were given a sheet of A3 paper and some coloured markers. Then Derek was given the pen to write down our ideas as we told him about what we thought. We said such thing as what type of music we would be doing and the name we would have for our magazine cover. We came to the conclusion to do two types of music genres, which were Funky House and Hip Hop. We came to a group conclusion to call our magazine "Mix It Up!" The reason we decided to call it this name is because it has a mixture of music genres. We decided to price our magazine at £3.99 because it would be released twice a week. The magazine will contain such things as fashion chase, interviews, album releases and so forth. Our Main target audience would be 16 – 20 year olds and will be aimed at both male and female. We was then taken into the Mac room for another tutorial but this time on how to use Photoshop, we was taught basic things as how to cut out images, how to save our work, how to colour in the background and other simple things like that. We also received our media cards.

Week 2

Today, we were assigned back into our groups that we had last week. We were given the task of designing four original magazine issue covers for our group. We discussed the aspects and specifications that we are planning to include in our project. this included things such as what features it would have; content, images, themes, target audience and title. we also discussed the frequency of publication of the magazine. we spent a while choosing the genre of music that the magazine would focus on, and decided that it would be a dual-genre; 'hip-hop' and 'funky house'. seeing as it would be released twice a month, we decided that one of the issues in the month would focus on 'hip-hop' and the other 'funky house'.

The magazine is likely to include things such as: biographies of artists, interviews, music charts, release dates, feuds within the music industry, and competitions giving readers the chance to win some FANTASTIC prizes =]. We set the retail price at £3.99 which we feel is a reasonable price compared to some of the top music magazines. After much discussion and brainstorming, we concluded that the name of the magazine would be called 'Mix It Up!'. The magazine will be targeted at 16 to 20 year-olds and will appeal to both male and female genders.

Today we had to decide on a name for our magazine (Mix it up). We had to also decide on a genre of music which was funky house and hip hop. We decided that we are going to publish it twice a month. we agreed on the contents of the magazine also. and the target audience (16-20). which will be people that listen to hip hop and funky house that are into vogue. my magazine will have a biography page when it is released every two weeks. my magazine will be priced at £3.99, it will also contain release dates for upcoming albums from certain artists that fit that genre, i am going to be giving away freebies once a month e.g. items such as t shirts, mix cds etc. the main attraction on the front of my mag for our consumers will be the image on the front cover which is normally a large picture of somone preferably an artist in this case, e.g micheal with a cap on. We also learned how to manipulate images on photoshop, throught a tutorial on how to briefly use it was shown to us using image manipulating tools such as magic wand, and cutting and pasting images to help

Today we were assigned back into our groups that we had last week. We had to  brainstorm ideas to put on a magazine cover which would make it attractive to the public eye. We advertised things like what the musical genre was, the title, the frequency of publication, the cost etc. We also discussed the contents of the actual magazine .i.e. Biography's, release dates, competitions, musical charts etc. In the end we came up with the title, 'Mix it up' for our magazine and the genre of music will be funky house/Hip Hop. the magazine would be targeted for the ages 16-20 and will cost £3.99. for our main attraction picture on the front cover we will either take pictures of each other or use different people. The fashion side will probably consists of jeans, bright colours, bold chains and earrings, hoody's and New Era caps.

Zen....zxz

We analysed a music magazine called 'HIP HOP'. We then annotated all the features of the magazine, such as the denotations & the connotations. We talked about the features and how they indicated what type of genre and target audience it was focused on. We then had to annotate another magazine in small groups. We were given a worksheet to give us a brief outline of what we had to write about.i.e. why the designer chose that front cover.

Today we analysed a music magazine called 'Hip-Hip connection' as a class. We looked at the effects of font sizes, colours, image/s and what effect they created on its audience, what attracted their attention and what has been used to convince and persuade you to buy the magazine.

We then analysed a magazine called 'Q' magazine, we did this as a group with everyone sitting with us on the table. This magazine didn't have much going on on its front cover. There was a dark/sepia effected image of an artist, we agreed that this was emphasising on the come-back of the group Oasis. We thought of this because Oasis hadn't been around for a time and the dark colours of the image related to the music group, Oasis to be old and they have come back.

We analyzed a music magazine called 'HiP-HOP'. We basically annotated all the features of the magazine, such as the denotations & the connotations. We also talked about the features and how they indicated what type of genre and target audience it was focused on. We were then given a worksheet and a copy of a different music magazine. we then had to comment on each feature of the magazine, and choose why the designer of the front cover, designed the magazine in that way.

Magazine lesson 1: Introduction to Magazine

The first thing we did in class was talk about different types of music magazines and then Rebecca wrote down the different types of music magazines there was on the board. We then looked at a magazine front cover on the whiteboard of 'Hip-Hop' and analysed and talked about the magazine cover, stating such things as why the man is the middle is the most important, and so forth. We then joined groups and was given different types of music genre magazines. Then we had to talk about the different features of the magazine that was given to us. We talked between us and jotted down short notes. We was give like 15 minutes on this task once we had finished, each group had to talk about their selected magazine and highlight the key points as to why is magazine is successful. Once we had all finish it was time to move on into the Mac room where we was shown how to use blogger.com, such things as how to sign in and leave post and pictures. Soon after the lesson came to an end.
